Link Building 101 - free directories submissions
Posted by: Marketing Guy Date posted: May 25th, 2006 Published in: Link Building, Rants n Drama, Search Engine OptimisationOK let’s think about this logically…
Google wants to index the organic web right? Google is looking for quality over quantity right? And loosely speaking, links are considered “votes” for your site?**
Well why oh why would you think for a second that submitting your site to that clearly-made-for-seo free directory would help your site? Does it in anyway replace good ol’ fashioned organic links?
Does it hell. They don’t look organic (generic subject areas thrown together). They certainly aren’t of a high quality (rarely any editorial control). And they certainly aren’t reputable votes.
A traditional method of starting off a discussion forum is to register a few usernames yourself and start off some fake discussions with them. Fair play. That’s a decent marketing move (noone posts on an empty forum).
But in the long term do you want to keep things that way? Of course not - you want to be filtering out the need to do that as the activity on the forums is taken over by “real” users.
So why is link building any different?
Free directory submissions are a good way to kick things off but are not a foundation to build long term success on. Period.

** OK I know links = votes hasn’t been the case in a long time. Big picture before you whine.
