Kill teh spammers!

Some people really annoy me and those people are usually spammers.  I’m not talking about autogenerated sites / keyword stuffing / whatever - I can ignore that (and am at times secretly impressed + jealous of the technical skills of the people behind it).

What bothers me is stupid spammers.  People who don’t really have a clue what they’re doing.

The other week I had an individual start a discussion on one of my forums - a moderator PM’d me saying he thought that she was an employeed of a certain company.

The post was along the lines of…”Hi my friend told me about (company) and says it was really great - what do you all think?”.

So after finding the poster’s IP resolving to the servers I went pretty apeshit.  Don’t get me wrong - the forums get spammed all the time and it doesn’t really bother me - just in this case, (company) was a fairly large company with some very prestigious big brand associations (Timesonline, FT.com, etc).

My points:

a)  They didn’t need to fucking spam in the first place.

b)  Posing as a regular user to build some buzz on forums is an incredibly tacky approach for medium to big sized brands to take.

c)  They were stupid enough not to mask their IP address.

Seriously - what was the fucking point?

In this case it backfired - the thread is now locked, but not before I made a scathing reply to the post - I *may* have repeated the company name more than once…and *may* have changed the topic title to “(company) are SPAMMERS”….and the thread *may* now be ranking at no. 9  on Google for a search for (company).

I did email the company (generic info@ email addy) - no response - although I wasn’t too pleasant and didn’t really expect a response anyway so fuck em.  Will probably get the lawyers onto me soon - but fortunately my site isn’t the only one in the top 10 dissing them. ;)

Happy days.

[…] bad publicity and hate campaign!  Case and point, recently I was in a less-than-pleasant mood and hit back at a forum spammer.  The benefit they got from some minor spamming is instantly killed by the long term negativity […]
