Content is king, as is spotting a gap.
On my travelogue site, i spotted that i was getting some hits for people searching for Tekena Inn (a hostel on Easter Island).
I wrote a page specifically for it, and a day later (yes a DAY!) it ranks on the first page of results.

This is a very thorough post that deals with the very real issue of optimisation. People DO want to rank for ‘this’ term or ‘that’ term without thinking about the content that they want to rank with.

I come across pages that rank well for particular terms only to find that the content does NOT serve me in any way.

I think what you said, ‘What’s the ultimate objective of the page? Keep repeating this to yourself at every stage – it’s critical you don’t lose sight of this…’ is very overlooked but highly important. Knowing whether the page is to serve as an information page, a sales page, etc will determine the nature of your content and how you present to the end user.

I agree with the majority of your points here, I agree that content is king, as with quality content, you will find that people will indeed want to link to you – with this in mind, its amazing how many websites fail to create content of this nature.

It’s one of these things that seems so simple but is actually quite difficult to do – in fact sometimes it’s near impossible to provide a comprehensive source on a subject, or even come up with new ideas for content (particularly in dull industry areas).

I’m a big fan of mashups too – good approach to take for generic subject areas / search terms.

I think this is one of the best articles I have read in a long while, yes people believe content is king but very rarely do they actually act on that philosophy. I think your point about looking what you can provide on that subject matter that no one else has is key to this. Also allowing people to access other useful resources through your page though various feeds and mashups is key, you dont have to have all the content on your site to create a compelling page people will want to link to.
