Haha I'm sure you do Mr Anonymous Poster! :P

(removed URL from the previous poster's comment - somehow I don't think anyone is going to come and admit reporting paid links and leave their own URL!)

Hey David and thanks for dropping by. :)

I agree with what you're saying there - I just don't think most people put so much thought into (or at least that's how it can appear) and tend to base their opinion on the subject on some perceived "ethical" standpoint.

I do think it would be good for us all to have unity to help sustain the industry but at the same time it has always been the spammer elements of the SEO industry that have forced Google to change the way things work. So IMO there does need to be some balance there. The reality of business means that there will always be people pushing the limits of what they can get away with and there may never be unity on certain issues. So I think the point I'm trying to get across with this article is to try and say that I think people should analyse their "principles" in certain areas and consider if there are logical reasons behind them, or emotional ones.

Agreed the other examples aren't all the same as this. I do think thought that it can come down to your own perspective though - lot's of people would call SEO in any form "spam". ;) Spam on Sphinn for example is only defined by the editorial guidelines - a slightly different outlook could see any self submissions marked as spam.

The wonders of working in an ambiguous industry, huh? :)

Nice write-up, Scott. While I still believe that someone who buys paid links and yet reports them as well is a bit hypocritical, the real concern here is helping Google win their war on paid links.

Google has declared war on ALL who buy and sell paid links. That kind of lumps everyone together who use paid links in their search marketing strategy. So, if we are divided against ourselves, our house cannot stand. However, if we work together, we can help keep the paid links industry alive and beneficial for marketing purposes.

It is a bit different than some of your other examples because if I report a competitor for domain spam, I am not doing the same thing myself. If I report a competitor to the Trading Standards, I am not ripping off customers myself. If I report a post as spam at Sphinn, I am not spamming Sphinn myself.
