Google Backlink Update – Jan 2007

For all those back link junkies out there, Google have / are in the process of updating back link counts.  Fused Nation for example has gone from 29 to 83 (thank you blog tag game!).

Noticing some TB PR updates too.

UPDATE – there’s some chatter about “PR Outages” – sites showing PR0 for no (apparent) reason.  Some posters on DaveN’s blog speculate that old PR could be getting dumped to make way for an update.

A lot of well known sites are being hit with TB PR0, including DaveN, Problogger, TheBestOf, Radio Times, ITV, v7n forums, HighRankings and Syndk8, so it isn’t panick stations for the PR0 crowd just yet! ;)

Matt confirms this is the quarterly Google data push (which updates link:, info: and related: data as well as exporting new values to the toolbar for PR).  A reminder to any newbies reading this – any changes in toolbar PR doesn’t mean rankings will change as these PageRank values will have been used for some time now.

It’s exciting stuff, I reckon they deliberately update it every quarter to keep the SEO’s excited!

    Hehe excited or preoccupied? ;)

There is something to be said for quarterly updates versus Yahoo style up to date link data – it takes the obsession with linking (and PR) away a little and refines it to simple quarterly milestones as a barometer for your progress.

I’d guess innovators would prefer the Google link data style, while followers would prefer Yahoo – innovators don’t want the competition seeing what they’re up to for a while! ;)
