Scott Boyd, UK SEO Consultant

Yeh another SEO blog, fan-bloody-tastic.  Just what the web needs!

Well, I’m not going to claim this is going to be a wildly different SEO blog that will revolutionise your life.  What I will try to do is cut the crap so we can start to dispel some of the mis-information in the industry, as well as posting some rants, news and gossip.

About Marketing Guy

Aka, Scott Boyd, 29 year old freelance SEO from Edinburgh, Scotland.

Like many, I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life when I left Uni - I had studied a joint degree in Marketing and Information Management mainly because I enjoyed the business aspect of marketing, but always had strong IT skills.

One of my strongest memories from Uni (circa 1998) - when doing my dissertation, I wanted to combine my subject areas (which had been split between 2 departments).  I suggested an ambitious project to my (marketing) lecturer, which encompassed many areas which we now know to be online marketing.  He told me to go to the IM department and find a tutor because he couldn’t assess the IT side of my idea.  I asked in the IM department and they told me to go to the marketing department because they couldn’t mark the marketing side…

So I left Uni and floated around random office jobs for a while - working both in IT and marketing depending on where I ended up.  But after a while, the lack of challenge bored me so I left to live abroad for a while, eventually landing a job with an SEO agency, which in turn introduced me to WebmasterWorld and other SEO resources.

6 years down the line and I have several successful sites under my wing (some ranking for highly competitive terms) as well as some brief experience with SEO agencies.  I currently handle the online marketing strategy for a large business directory as well as a number of smaller clients.

On top of my own projects, I also offer SEM services.  Please feel free to contact me for more information.

Why “Marketing Guy”?  No real reason - I’m no marketing guru or anything but I do have a better understanding of marketing than many in the SEO industry - I was just in a rush to register on WmW back in the day so I picked the first username that came to my mind!  It’s kinda stuck now.
