IMO, one of the core reasons that Wikipedia appears in many SERPs is that SEOs churn out articles for link building purposes and link out to WP with keywords to seem &quot;authoritative&quot;.

Wikipedia is the friendly gay bloke that you don&#039;t mind your girlfriend hanging out with.  Nice and non threatening - link away freely and even if you face Wikipedia competition in a SERP, it&#039;s one less competitor to worry about. ;)
