Self moderation and the .org domain combined with the size of the non commercial site all sits firmly inline with Google’s origins as the 1st search engine to consider link popularity (Google originally being called BackRub) - If there is a link on Wikipedia that shouldn’t be there - you can be certain that it wont be there for long- Oh so wonderfully Web 2.0!

Ah but not always the case Scott - many less competitive areas are fairly easy to grab links from without fear of angry mob justice style of “moderation”.

IMO, one of the core reasons that Wikipedia appears in many SERPs is that SEOs churn out articles for link building purposes and link out to WP with keywords to seem “authoritative”.

Wikipedia is the friendly gay bloke that you don’t mind your girlfriend hanging out with. Nice and non threatening - link away freely and even if you face Wikipedia competition in a SERP, it’s one less competitor to worry about. ;)
