UK online ad spending projection reduced

The UK’s businesses may not be spending as much on online advertising as had previously been thought.
Analyst firm eMarketer has lowered its projection for the country’s internet spend for 2008 to £3.34 billion and 2009 to £3.58 billion.

iPhone advert misleads users – apparently…

The BBC are reporting today that the recent iPhone advert which says “all the parts of the Internet are on the iPhone” has been called “misleading” by the Advertising Standards Authority.  The reason?  Because it doesn’t support Java or Flash!
The ASA said the advert:
“gave a misleading impression of the internet capabilities of the iPhone”.

An interesting new development from HMV (UK based High Street DVD, music, etc sales) – GetCloser, a social networking type site for music and movie fans.  Basically, you network with other users in a similar way to Bebo or FaceBook – but for films and music.

Olympics marketing logo comes under fire

The logo for the London 2012 Olympics does not reflect the identity of the Games, marketers have suggested.  According to a survey commissioned by the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM), more than half (57 per cent) of marketers polled have serious doubts about the logo’s effectiveness.

BBC ‘overspends on web portal’

The BBC has spent more than it should have done on its web portal bbc.co.uk, according to a new report.
Figures from the BBC Trust, which aims to ensure the broadcaster uses its licence fees wisely, reveal an overspend of 48 per cent on the baseline budget allocated for the service.

Zero Strategy report today that Business Green have noted that the Advertising Standards Authority (UK) is currently launching an investigation into claims of “greenwashing” amongst advertisers.  “Greenwashing” is process of exaggerating the environmental benefits of a product in order to sell it more “effectively”.
