The UK’s businesses may not be spending as much on online advertising as had previously been thought. Analyst firm eMarketer has lowered its projection for the country’s internet spend for 2008 to £3.34 billion and 2009 to £3.58 billion.

iPhone advert misleads users – apparently…

The BBC are reporting today that the recent iPhone advert which says “all the parts of the Internet are on the iPhone” has been called “misleading” by the Advertising Standards Authority.  The reason?  Because it doesn’t support Java or Flash! The ASA said the advert: “gave a misleading impression of the internet capabilities of the [...]

“I am” – TV ad campaign by Orange prompts users to use search

Posted by: Marketing Guy Date posted: August 19th, 2008 Published in: Advertising, Search Engine Optimisation

Just noticed the new TV ad campaign by Orange prompts users to “search online for ‘I am’“. A little bit optimistic? They do run a PPC campaign for the term, but with 1.1 billion competing pages, perhaps it wasn’t a great idea to include that particular step in the communication process?   The site does rank [...]

Not sure if this old news or not but interesting all the same if you haven’t read about it yet.   The NYTimes reported last month that 3 UK Internet providers (BT, Carphone Warehouse and Virginmedia) are teaming up to offer an advertising alternative to that offered by the big 3 search engines. The 3 companies have allowed [...]

New Playstation Campaign – Style over content?

Many of you will have seen the new Playstation launch TV campaign. The film is undoubtedly stunning but it certainly raises questions about TBWA’s new positioning strategy for Playstation. “Never underestimate the power of Playstation” was copied by numerous other products subsequently but the PS3s aspirational “This is living” I doubt will have the same [...]

Scottish Power tossers

A bit of a rant here, mainly due to the fact that everyone and his brother is jumping on the fuel conservation bandwagon this year. I don’t use gas, but I get charged for it.  Well I use a little – just the rings on my cooker (which I rarely use), but because I pay [...]

Oxfam Unwrapped – Xmas gift idea

Posted by: Marketing Guy Date posted: December 18th, 2006 Published in: Advertising, General

Being a bit of a slacker and leaving things to the last minute, I just saw a TV ad for Oxfam Unwrapped.  It’s a pretty cool idea – it bundles donations into “gift packages” that range from £1 to £500+ – you simply buy the package, the money is donated to the cause and the [...]

Online gaming – untapped market for advertisers?

Posted by: Marketing Guy Date posted: October 19th, 2006 Published in: Advertising, Marketing, Online Gaming, Traffic Generation

I think my generation has a very unique perspective on gaming.  I’m 27 – I grew up with Nintendo, Sega, Commodore, Amiga, etc and it doesn’t really need to be stated, but each generation of video gaming brings with it new markets and a hell of a lot more money spent by consumers each year. [...]

Adsense now displaying photos

Posted by: Marketing Guy Date posted: June 28th, 2006 Published in: Advertising, Google, Google Adsense, PPC

V7N are reporting (from Jensense source) that Adsense are now displaying photos in place of text adverts.  I noticed this yesterday on my career advice site – a generic picture of some random “business” type guy was placed in the top ad spot (rest of the ads were text – job / cv related). The [...]

Ask TV ad – Bigfoot

Available to watch online, the new Ask TV ad is short and fairly quirky.  It features Bigfoot using Ask to find out how to impress girls.  Not entirely sure that Bigfoot is the typical Ask user (heh, well you never know!) nor that a search engine could help a hairy, 8ft beast pick up a hot [...]
